Simplifying user experience within clinical trials
Improving functionality and user satisfaction for the Pharmaseal Unified Trial Management Platform Engility®
Situation
Pharmaseal is an innovative company seeking to simplify the management and control of clinical trials for biopharmaceutical and medical device companies through their unified trial management platform, Engility®.
With many years’ clinical trial and pharmaceutical industry experience, the Pharmaseal team understood the challenges faced by study teams when using traditional CTMS (clinical trial management system) and eTMF (electronic trial master file) systems.
They wanted to create a solution that would simplify the user experience and also reduce the time and effort associated with system validation. To achieve this, they needed to build a proof-of-concept solution that could demonstrate the value of the platform to investors and secure funding.
Therefore, Pharmaseal turned to nuom early on in the development process for our UI/UX design and brand management experience.
Solution
Nuom worked closely with the Pharmaseal team to deliver the two aspects of the project:
The first priority was to create design standards to implement across the company, from marketing materials to investor decks, to the product itself. nuom held two workshops to understand Pharmaseal’s initial ideas, preferences, and any specific requirements then gather feedback on different concepts and options. This collaborative approach meant that standards were agreed upon quickly so a full set of design standards and brand library were available within 2-3 weeks to ensure consistency across different content formats.
Once the design standards were in place, nuom team members spent time in the Pharmaseal office working closely with their development team on UI/UX. The nuom team effectively became an extension of the Pharmaseal team, but with the flexibility to turn resources ‘on and off’ as the project – and cash-flow – dictated.
“It was helpful to work with nuom to implement a design standard and brand library to ensure consistency across our content and application.”
Outcome
Incorporating strong UI/UX guidelines early in the product development process enabled Pharmaseal to ensure the Engility platform was designed to provide a better user experience from the outset. This helped secure investment funding and continues to be a key differentiator for Pharmaseal.
This solid foundation was critical when adding additional capabilities to the platform. Typically, although many companies claim their applications are integrated and user-level branding is the same, underneath it all the application frameworks and databases are separate. However, by mapping out the long-term strategy for the platform and including UI/UX in the foundational development stages Pharmaseal ensured the product experience remains seamless as new applications and capabilities are added to the platform.
“When we demonstrate the product we always get strong feedback on the user interface and navigation of our system.”
